About the Triangle SportsPlex

In the early nineties two groups of visionary Orange County citizens recognized the need for a first class recreational facility in the northern part of Orange County. The first group was interested in an aquatics center and the second was looking for an ice rink.

The two groups merged and in May of 1995 out of their vision the Triangle SportsPlex was born. The Triangle SportsPlex is one of two facilities nationwide that offer the combined services of an indoor aquatics center, a NHL size ice rink and a fitness center.

In 1999 after some financial difficulties, Eaton Vance, a Boston based investment firm, became the owner of the SportsPlex. Since that time the SportsPlex’s mission has been to provide a Class “A” recreational facility for the people of Orange County and to be a good corporate partner in Orange County.

Under the management of Eaton Vance the SportsPlex has shown steady growth in our memberships and in our fee based activities. The SportsPlex offers a variety of membership options to fit any activity or budgetary needs.

We offer an extensive range of fitness activities to our members and to our walk-in guests. These activities range from land activities such as Basic Training (a fitness class based on the Navy Seals workout) to Belly Dancing and Yoga.

We also offer a broad selection of water based aerobic activities such as Water Walking and Deep Water Training. We boast excellent activity-based After School and Summer Camp programs for the youth of Orange County.

We have also partnered with the Orange County Senior Center to offer low cost punch passes for activities designed for seniors. The SportsPlex is committed to offering the very best service and activities to the citizens of Orange County and the surrounding areas.

Without the SportsPlex in operation where would:

• 4 Swim teams practice (Orange High School and Cedar Ridge High School)
• 800+ per year adult hockey players play
• 600+ per year youth hockey players play
• 25,000+ per year recreational Skaters skate
• 250+ per week figure skaters skate
• 80+ per day after school kids go
• 100+ per day summer campers (11 weeks of camp offered)

The SportsPlex draws a large number of people from outside Orange County with the various activities held here during the year. Swim meets typically attract 500 athletes plus family members and supporters each weekend.

Duke University and the SportsPlex are hosting the ACCHL collegiate Hockey tournament in February. The Central Carolina Skate Club hosts their annual skate competition in April, which draws between 5,000 and 7,500 competitors and spectators to the facility and area.

The Triangle SportsPlex is committed to the local community. We employ 130 people. We have just been awarded the Family Friendly Employer in Orange County as voted by the Chapel Hill / Orange County Chamber of Commerce and the Orange Partnership for Young Children. We also run several fund raising events for local charities throughout the year. With a sustained partnership with the county, the Triangle SportsPlex can continue to be a valuable resource for the citizens of Orange County.
