Things
I Have Learned From My Clients
I’m a Personal Trainer. People pay me
to teach them about exercise on a personal level. I also teach
group exercise classes where people rely on my expertise to give
them a good, safe and effective workout.
Ask me a good routine
for abs and I’ve got one. Need exercises to strengthen
a rotator cuff? No problem! Need to loose weight, tone up, slim
down,
bulk up? I can help you with any of those things. There are times
when my clients and members here teach me things; important things
about life.
Recently, my oldest son at college suffered
a freak accident with an egg and his eye were severely injured.
(Yes, I did say an egg!) During the long week
we had to patiently wait and see if he was going to get his sight back.
While
waiting, I was overwhelmed by the concern of members and my clients that
sent emails and called about this matter. They went out of their
way to stop by
and ask how he was after their workouts. They gave words of encouragement
and shared
stories designed to ease my worry and make me laugh. (From the stories I
have heard, it is a wonder that anyone made it out of College
in one piece!)
As
I trained my clients and taught my classes that week, I realized
how much of a
two-way street our relationship was and I wanted to share some of the
things I have learned.
- From Ms. Rose I have learned to never let anyone
else set the standards for my life. I need to live up to my own
expectations.
- From Drena and Sandy I learned that working out
can be an expression of love. The gift of health is a wonderful
gift to give and get
from your spouse.
- From MaryAnn and Linda I have learned that
age truly is just a number. Being a vibrant, beautiful woman
at any age is attainable.
- From Anna I have learned that a dose
of humor helps any situation!
- From Jenine, Alex and Thankful,
3 talented young skaters, I have learned to set my sites on a
goal and do the work needed
to achieve
it.
- From my new client, Emily, I have learned to focus my energies
and keep my commitments to myself and others.
- From Mary, I learned
to accept the good days with the bad. Both will come and both
will go.
- From Thomas, who has been training
with me for 5 years, I have learned that it’s the quality
of life that matters, not necessarily the quantity. (Despite
the fact that he will
probably
never actually
be able to touch his toes.)
- From Art, I have learned to have
a positive outlook on life and if I am having trouble with that,
learn to laugh at life, ‘because
there are times life is laughing at you.
- From Pearlene and Leon,
I have learned that marriage is like a scale and you need a good
partner to balance you out. I see
in them a support system to be envied.
- From Andy, who has been
blind since childhood, I learned that I really don’t have
an excuse for not doing the things I know I need to do. (And
that he still patiently puts up with
my
jokes about re-arranging the machines!)
There are others at
the SportsPlex, just like these I mentioned, that have been a part
of my life. I could never list them all
but a few come randomly to mind.
- The Tri crew,
who never fail to amaze me with their dedication and willingness
to bring a “newbie” into
the fold.
- My Instructors, who could teach anywhere in the state,
but choose to teach here because they love the people and love
what they do.
- The home school moms who make fitness part of
the curriculum.
- The Monday night step class, who are more like
a family than a class!
Of all the clubs I have worked at, this one has the best feel
of “community”.
As I share my knowledge of exercise with them, I also share part of my
life. In return, they share the same things with me and a relationship
is formed.
